Around 700 million over budget, and not finished... can you see a problem with this rail overpass? It's a $5.3 billion dollar Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transit 20 mile long elevated rail system
on top of the pillar, there are 2 levels of concrete the wood seems to show that clearly
big gap between pieces, and a hell of a crack forming on the bottom
This rail project was supposed to benefit residents and tourists on Oahu from Kapolei to the Ala Moana Mall. Basically the South side of the island.
I'm thinking it's a fast build to get it to where it's too far past the point of not return, and then it is cheaper to fix and finish than to demolish. Contactor is not going to get good PR for this

This rail idea has been around for 40 years. Never was worked out. It would have prevented the daily traffic jam on the H1 for the past 30 years
The initial Honolulu rail line is proposed to run about 20 miles from East Kapolei, near the University of Hawaii-West Oahu campus, to Ala Moana Center. Along the way, it would pass Waipahu, Leeward Community College, Pearl City, Pearlridge, Aloha Stadium, Salt Lake, Kalihi, Honolulu Community College, downtown Honolulu and Kakaako. Extensions are also planned. One extension would go from Ala Moana Center to the University of Hawaii-Manoa campus, as well as Waikiki.
More than 60 percent of Oahu's population and 80 percent of its employment is located in the designated transit corridor.

AnsaldoBreda and AnsaldoSTS, which together form Ansaldo Honolulu JV, were facing a deluge of bad press for shoddy construction and broken contractual promises from Buffalo, New York, to Gothenburg, Sweden.
Honolulu is basing it’s driverless rail system on the Copenhagen Metro, and Ansaldo has a production facility in Pittsburg, where the rail cars will be assembled.

just 23 years ago this bridge was made, yesterday, it fell apart, and killed this young couple and their baby. Can the transportation dept pay attention to our crumbling infrastructure now?
above is the far side, and what it had looked like, notice the top half, which I will guess is the hip high wall to keep vehicles from driving off the bridge sideways... a K Rail is one term for it, Jersey Barrier is another

I have to disagree with your headline implying that accident was due to structural deficiency.
This looks like it happened during construction of a new sidewalk which was on top of the overhang, adding 532lb +/- per linear ft of bridge (assuming 6' wide & 8" deep).
The contractor had kick braces and overhang forms in place, which is practice for placing fresh concrete.
It also looks like there is a saw cut down the edge of the deck along out side beam and no exposed reinforcement.
My guess is that the contractor expected the kick braces to hold everything up until the could complete the saw cut and crane lift the deck portion and Jersey barrier off the side in a couple of lifts.
To me -this looks like contractor negligence not a rotten bridge. The quoted sufficiency rating of 95.3 is a measure of how well the bridge services the road way, items such as alignment, no of lanes and clearance. The Structural Rating is the number everyone should be concerned about, rating of deterioration of structural members, deck, impact damage and erosion.
I do agree that our highway infrastucture needs a massive amount of attention but that is not what is at fault in this case.

Road Check 2015 will be June 2nd, 3rd, 4th
Each year during the 72-hour blitz, 10,000 CMV enforcement officers, from Canada to Mexico inspect approximately 17 trucks or buses every minute.
During the 2014 Commercial Vehicle Safety Association inspections, 72,415 driver inspections were conducted. 4.8% were found with OOS violations, and 825 seatbelt violations were found.
73,475 buses and trucks were inspected. Of those, 49,656 were subjected to a Level 1 inspection. A Level 1 inspection is a 37-point inspection. A Level 1 inspection is ” an examination of driver’s record of duty status and the safety of the vehicle. Drivers are required to provide items such as their license, endorsements, medical card and hours-of-service documentation, and are checked for seat belt usage and the use of alcohol and/or drugs. The vehicle inspection includes checking items such as the braking system, coupling devices, exhaust system, frame, fuel system, lights, safe loading, steering mechanism, suspension, tires, van and open-top trailer bodies, wheels and rims, windshield wipers, and emergency exits on buses,” the CVSA states.
A total of 5,738 hazmat vehicles were inspected. 919 were found to have OOS violations and 172 hazmat drivers were found to have OOS violations.

According to a press release from the State Highway Patrol, Patrol officers and motor carrier enforcement inspectors inspected 1,237 trucks. Of those, 280 trucks and buses and 40 drivers were placed out of service during the 72-hour blitz.
In 2013, Last year, Ohio State Highway Patrol and CMV enforcement officers inspected 1,566 vehicles. OSHP and CMV enforcement officers placed 363 trucks and 65 drivers OOS.

North Charleston police officer's attorney states that the cop " believes he followed all the proper procedures and policies of the North Charleston Police Department" when shooting unarmed traffic stop suspect, in the back, more than 5 times, as he ran away
North Charleston, South Carolina, police officer Michael Slager who shot and killed Walter "Lamar" Scott in the back Saturday April 4th 2015, was formally charged with murder this evening April 7th.
At the time of this shooting, Scott was wanted for arrest on a Family Court warrant, Charleston County sheriff’s Maj. Eric Watson said Tuesday.
He had a history of arrests related to contempt of court charges for failing to pay child support. The only accusation of violence against Scott during his lifetime came through an assault and battery charge in 1987. http://www.postandcourier.com/article/20150407/PC16/150409468
The police incident report states that Slager called in a traffic stop for a broken taillight, and then advised officers that he was in a foot pursuit of the driver of the vehicle.
Slager then said he had deployed his Taser and requested backup units to the scene, according to the police report.

"The video is very demonstrative of exactly what happened," Mayor R. Keith Summey said. "Without the video, and that was the only witness there was, it would be difficult to ascertain directly what did occur." ( He can't trust or believe the police reports of his police department )
In the above New York Times video, Slager shoots Scott, then goes back to the intial scuffle area, picks up something, brings it to where Scott is laying on the ground, and drops it. Looks like the taser.
In a statement tonight, Gov. Nikki Haley said, "We have many good law enforcement officers in the field. What happened in this case is not acceptable in South Carolina, nor is it reflective of our values"
But it's clear that his fellow police did not arrest Slager for his actions. It's clear the Mayor doesn't trust the police in his own city, nor their police reports.

Once again, anytime you see police, get your camera or video recording. You're only as safe as the evidence you collect. Its the only evidence of the truth, and cops can't be trusted. Or prove me wrong someday. Not today, but someday, I hope you can.

But no one starts CPR. The police have said, though, that they tried desperately to save Scott until paramedics showed up. Obviously, they lied again.

Slager signed his oath of office" with the police force on March 1, 2010, pledging to "faithfully serve the citizens of this city" and "never abuse my authority either by words or acts."
"I will enforce the law courteously and appropriately without fear or favor, malice, or ill will, never employing unnecessary force or violence," the oath said.
At the time, Slager was searching for a suspect who was described as being 5 feet 5 inches tall. The man he confronted was 6-foot-3.
If the family of Walter Scott had waited until after the police concluded their investigation, and filed the report... we wold have the proof of police covering up for murder. The entire event is tragic, and nothing can downplay this murder. But bringing the video evidence to the public after all the police were done with their nonsense "investigation" would have proved what integrity the police of North Charleston have, or do not.

Well.. this ought to give someone nightmares, and you'll never absentmindedly open your car door ever again
Always have a can of wasp spray handy. It's better than pepper spray for people, bears, bees, what ever is attacking you that you'd rather be left alone by. Good for 15 to 25 feet of stream spray.
